What to do in case of a leak in Amsterdam?

Discovering a leak can be stressful, but it’s important to act quickly and efficiently to prevent further damage. Here are some steps you can take if you suspect a leak:

1. Turn off the water or gas

If you suspect a serious leak in your water pipes or gas system, it’s crucial to shut off the water supply or gas immediately. This prevents further damage to your home and reduces the risk of water damage or dangerous situations such as gas leaks. The main water or gas valve is usually located near the water or gas meter. If you’re unsure of its location, contact an expert right away.

How to shut off the main valve?

  • Look for the water meter, usually located in the utility room or under the floor.
  • Turn the main valve clockwise to shut off the water supply.
  • For gas: Locate the gas valve and turn it off until the gas flow stops.

2. Document the damage

It’s important to document the damage thoroughly for any potential insurance claim. You can do this by taking photos of all affected areas in your home and keeping a logbook where you note the time and date you discovered the leak. This documentation will be valuable when filing a damage claim with your insurance company.

How to document the damage?

  • Take clear photos and videos of the damage to walls, floors, ceilings, and personal belongings.
  • Write down when you discovered the leak, the steps you took, and what damage was visible at the time.
  • Keep the report from Ontdekjelek.nl to show to your insurer.

3. Secure valuable items

While waiting for the leak detection specialists, it’s important to protect any valuable items near the leak. Move furniture, electronics, and other valuable belongings to a dry area to prevent water damage. If the leak is near electrical appliances, make sure to turn off the electricity in that part of your home to avoid short circuits.

What can you do?

  • Protect furniture by placing waterproof materials or towels underneath.
  • Prevent further water damage by using buckets or containers to catch dripping water.
  • If the leak is near electrical outlets or appliances, turn off the electricity in that area to prevent hazards.

  • Dry wet areas as quickly as possible. Use towels, mops, or a wet vacuum to remove excess water.
  • Open windows and doors to promote air circulation, which helps dry out the area.
  • If water is leaking from the ceiling or walls, place a bucket to catch the dripping water and prevent it from spreading.

6. Ensure a permanent solution

After the leak detection, it’s crucial to repair the leak as soon as possible. Often, the cause of the leak can be fixed quickly by a plumber, but in some cases, there may be more significant damage to the pipes or the infrastructure of your home. It’s important to ensure that the root cause of the problem is fully addressed to prevent it from happening again.

Where Do Water Pipe Leaks Occur?

Leaks in water pipes are not always easy to detect. They are often hidden behind walls, under floors, or in other hard-to-reach places. In general, water pipe leaks fall into one of the following categories:

Connections Between Pipe Sections

Connections between different pipe sections are often the weakest points in a piping system. If these joints are not properly sealed or have worn out, water can escape. In some cases, the leak is immediately visible, especially when large amounts of water are leaking. However, when the pipes are concealed behind walls or under floors, locating the leak becomes a challenge. Our leak detection specialists can pinpoint the leak using advanced equipment, such as thermal imaging cameras or acoustic detection, without the need for demolition work.

Leaking Pipe Sections

Not only the joints, but the pipes themselves can also start leaking. This can happen due to damage during renovations, ground settling of the house, or limescale buildup that restricts water flow. In older homes, pipes may deteriorate over time, eventually leading to leaks. When a pipe is easily accessible, the leak is often visible to the naked eye. However, in many cases, pipes are hidden behind ceilings, walls, or under floors. Our specialists use techniques such as thermography, ultrasonic detection, and endoscopy to pinpoint the exact location of the leak without unnecessary demolition work.

Goed bedrijf.
